A Story of Regret
(2018)
written & directed by Colin Wang
A filmmaker finds a truth in life in the making of an intimate documentary about his grandparents past, along with his own. It's a bold and experimental documentary that focuses on provoking specific feelings from the viewer, instead of the facts and stats of a traditional documentary.
Now, this film was a struggle to make, and more of a struggle in post-production, namely editing. As a first-time filmmaker documenting such an intimate story, with people I'm so close with presented an even bigger challenge. I didn't wanted to ask questions that were uncomfortable, or intrude their spaces----it led to interviews with no content, and stories that didn't matter. I gave up on the film and left the footage to die on a hard drive. Then almost 6 months later, I got a call from my grandpa. He had a severe lung failure that almost took his life away. Life is short, and I definitely did not want to risk regretting not making this film... And here it is, after several months on the laptop, I've put together a film in which I saw as respectful, not as a memoir of their lives, but a gift, a present, showing my gratitude to them for what they've given me.
